Brand new starter...only works intermittently

Post by montgomery63 » Sat Jun 16, 2018 2:56 pm

Last season, my starter seemed really weak. I followed the DIY article on this site to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Afterwards, it seemed to work a little better.

When I took the bike out this year, the starter wouldn't even turn over. I could roll the bike and jump start it, but the starter wouldn't work at all. I replaced my battery assuming it was time to do so. A new battery still wouldn't turn the starter over. So I took the starter off again and this time replaced the brushes when I cleaned it. I reinstalled the starter, and still nothing. Strong battery but the starter wouldn't even make a click or anything. At this point, I figured maybe I broke a wire or something when I reassembled the starter. I found a brand new starter online for $80.

Just installed the new starter and tried it. Same thing. Headlight dims when I push the starter button but nothing from the starter. No click, no sound at all. So I rolled and jump started the bike and rode it a few minutes. Turned it off and tried the starter. The starter worked perfectly and started the bike. So I immediately shut the bike off. I switched on the kill switch and tried it. The starter worked. I pushed the start button a second time and it didn't work this time. Turned the kill switch off and tried to start it. Nothing. The starter didn't work.

I jump started the bike again and rode it for a few minutes and shut it off. Tried it again and the starter worked and started the bike. Shut the bike off and let it sit for a few minutes. Then tried to start it. Nothing.

I am so friggin' frustrated! Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? I don't want to keep throwing money at this without a clue what the problem is. Thanks for any input.

Check battery connections, the negative ground cable and it's connection to the frame.. sounds like a loose or corroded connection to me..gets hot and works better cools off and no go.

Let's make sure...you have checked the dogbone fuse, right?

Let's remove the solenoid from the equation. When it is not starting, short across the solenoid terminals with an old screwdriver (there will be sparks) and see if that makes the engine crank (make sure it's in neutral first!).

I checked the ground wire to frame connection. It was clean. I thought about the solenoid but haven’t tried that yet. I will check that next. But I don’t know about the dogbone fuse you mentioned. Can you tell me where that is?
