Low KV on 3-4 coil

Post by terryt » Thu Jun 21, 2018 11:13 am

Low Kv on 3-4
I have got low kv reading on 3-4 coil. they are new coils leads plugs and caps. 1-2 have high Kv reading.
you can remove both leads and she would still run. but will pick up when the revs are increased
swapped coils tried a different coil it is still the same. checked wiring carbs and if any vacuum leaks all good

Any ideas what else I can look at check.

may be the pulse generator and pickups?

A weak pulse from the pulse coil possible...a poor ignition module also possible.
Without trying to run the bike, can you swap them to see if the spark problem follows?
Not sure what bike your working on???

Thanks for your reply
It a gl1100 1982
New ignition module fitted
low kw on the coil to 3-4 cylinders
When we swaped the wires to the coils terminals and ht leads over low Kv was on 1-2

This is making me think pulse generator pick ups

Great. The 1100 has 2 completely separate circuits for the ignition.
The coils and ignition modules can be swapped.
As far as the pulse coil....there is a way to at least check them.
By swapping ignition coils and it stayed the same eliminated them..
Swapping the ignition module and it stayed the same eliminated them..
All that's left is the pulse coils...
Before you run out and buy a new set, take a close look at the 4 wire plug next to the battery...It's the pulse coil wires.Mine we're badly corroded...Probably from the battery not being vented properly.
This is a good place to check the pulse coil resistance too.

Ok unplugged and plugged all plugs i could see, checked ohms on pulse coils, they are the same i have fire on front 2 wires but none on back 2. i switched the yellow and blue wires on coils and spark moved to the rear wires, makes me think the black cdi box is malfunctioning.any thoughts?

Hi 1st you don't want to be checking ohms readings with the ignition on or any 12 volt live feeds.
It sounds like the coil igniters check the connections and try swapping the coil igniters over

Sound like a coil. When you swapped the coil wires blue and yellow did you swap the ht leads

That is the turn signal cancel control unit. The igniter modules (it is not CDI ignition) are small rectangular aluminum boxes, 2 of them. Try switching them.

I swapped those two plugins and spark was still on front 2 spark plugs. I am thinking it is the black rectangular cdi box.

Have you checked the yellow and blue wires for continuity or any breaks in the wires
