? About oem footrests?

Post by chunk » Mon Jul 16, 2018 9:37 am

Greetings all, over the years I've owned 40 to 50 motorbikes, currently i have a BMW r100r mystic and a Yamaha xt500, but I have never owned a goldwing. Being a fan of boxer twins I'm not sure why. Anyway, I'm picking up a 1981gl1100 Interstate tomorrow. It has some funky aftermarket running boards on it now. I am trying to source some oem footrests and am wondering what years are compatible, more than just 1981, so i can expand the years i look at. Basically, what years will fit so i have more choice in parts bikes. Thank you for any assistance, cheers. Scott.

1980-1981 are identical so completely interchangeable front and rear. 1982 fits but the front pegs have a slightly different bend angle to the arms, and the rears look different than the 80-81 style in the rubber portion of the peg. 82's fit fine but you would need to get a matched set front or rear for them to look right. 1983's are totally different again. They are flatter and slightly wider and some people prefer them. They fit fine but you would need to get a matched set of that year to look right. The 80-81 pegs shouldn't be hard to find in California. I did the exact same thing you are doing when I got my 1980 Interstate. The running boards and heel/toe shifter went in the junk pile and a nice set of stock 1980 parts from ebay went back on. I couldn't have been happier with the results.

Thanks for the info, so if i read you right, '80-'83 will all mount up to the frame with the slight differences you referenced. I like the wider look on (i think) the '83. Cheers, Scott.
