warm intake tubes

The 1983 aspencade i am working on has never had the valves adjusted according to owner, over 70000 kms, when i was riding it the other night i reached down and touched the intake pipe on the back left cylinder, it was warm to the touch. To my thoughts these pipes should be cool when running. I will set valves and see if this helps. Bike seems sluggish for power. Does anyone have an idea what temperature these intakes should be at?

I'm not sure what temperature they should be, but on my '75 GL1000, after a run, they are almost too hot to touch. When you consider they are metal and attached directly to the cylinder head though, it makes sense that they will be as hot as the head itself, give or take a degree or two.

I thought maybe while running the air flow would make them cooler.

Isn't it frustrating to hear the crazy antics of previous owners. I'd doubt the cam belts will have ever been serviced in that many miles too. Check your bike thoroughly for more fun surprises and little time bombs ready to go off courtesy of the previous owner Bozo's. I've had some similar previous owner surprises on my poor old 1980 Hondog. I'm getting it all sorted out though over time.

I just installed new belts and a new stator.

Get yourself a new set of valve cover gaskets before you start, as at 70,000 miles, the old ones will likely crumble in your hands and won't be able to be reused.
