thought i had posted this earlier; sorry if it's a duplicate ...
i have a parts bike, 1981 gl1100 that i was hoping to salvage the engine from, but it's not looking good.
in addition to low compression all around (75-85psi) cylinder 3 is noticeably hotter to the touch than the rest, and there is white/blue smoke coming from the right bank.
i know that white smoke is coolant, blue is oil, but what would cause a single cylinder to run hot ?
p.s. i am new to goldwings and fairly new to motorcycles in general.
thanks
joe

Re: cylinder 3 running hot
A lean fuel/air mixture will cause hot running. Maybe a problem with #3 carb.

Re: cylinder 3 running hot
Yep blown head gasket can cause blue and white smoke and low compression. Air leak into a cylinder will lean it out and cause it to run hot check the plugs what color is it?? white = lean...
Low compression could be stuck rings which may loosen up with some running time..have you set the valves?? run for a few minutes check compression then pull the plugs add a little oil to each cylinder then check compression again if it comes up = ring issues if not valves issues.
