newgold,

white smoke and sweetish smell = coolant getting into the combustion chamber = head gasket.
worst case scenario is cracked block; 2nd worst case is cracked head. i am new to goldwings myself but i haven't read anything that leads me to think that these engines are prone to cracked blocks/heads, so it is likely just a head gasket (if one of the goldwing gurus chimes in on this, take his word, not mine).
a head gasket replacement is well within the capabilities of the average back-yard mechanic, just youtube it and make sure you are comfortable with it and have the necessary tools and parts on hand. (a torque wrench is one of the necessary tools).

also, there's the possibility of a warped cylinder head. you can check it with a straightedge and a set of feeler gauges.
not a death sentence though, a machine shop can smooth it out.

Head gasket most likely..it's an 8 hour job not hard but lots to be careful about. Look through the how to section for instructions.
