(R) Turn Signal won't work '83 Aspy...bad switch ?

Post by dakotanator »

Okay.........it was working this morning, just fine. Went on the road for a while, was making right turn.......dash light didn't come on indicating signal.

Left turn works fine. Lights are on. When I turn on RIGHT signal.......light goes out. No clicking from relay under false tank. LEFT turn.....fine. All lights function
properly EXCEPT right signal. And....as I mentioned...it was working when I took off this morning.

I checked ground......fine. Also know it's fine because light is on until I turn signal switch.

BAD SWITCH....? Can they be cleaned..? Possibly bad contact within switch..? Anyone have this issue before..?

Thanks for any help.

Well my schematic shows "Orange and Light blue" coming out of the switch cluster being the switch output to the lamps...I'd be tempted to locate them as close to the switch assembly and probe each for volts as you operate the turn signal...If one works and the other does not...your switch is in need of your attention...If there's blinking volts on one and steady volts on the other..the switch is ok and there's a bad connection between it and the light.Possibly in a plug...

2 things I dislike the most.........plumbing repair and electrical repair..!! uhgggg But at least it's not too bad on these "old" '83's..........I wonder what it's like on the 1500's or the 1800's....? (Don't think I want to find out. )

Thanks again for the testing tip, virgilmobile. The switch had power to the left, and ZERO volts on the right. As per your thoughts.......bad switch.
I ordered a new one 2 days ago figuring that was the issue....supposed to be here early next week. Crossing my fingers, but I'm betting the new switch will fix it.

The bike.......other than that "little" issue, runs like new. 46k-n-change on it at the moment. Hoping to flip to 47k before the "snow" hits here in Montana. ha ha

I guess it's detailing time til the package arrives. Which is also quite relaxing.

Easy troubleshooting when you know what to look for and where.
That's what this is all about.
Not to be confused with the hokey-pokey song. :D

Used a jumper wire with pointed ends on it (made from multimeter parts) and tested the wires from the switch. I was able to get each side to flash when I jumped them, and then tried the switch again. Left works, right does not. So confirmed.....bad switch.

Will be getting my new one in the mail early this week, but piece of mind knowing at least that was the actual issue.

Your getting the idea.
Identify..test and confirm...then replace if it can't be fixed...
Good job.
