Nice difference with Castrol 20w50 regular oil

Post by fcmusician »

Just got back from a nice evening ride after the oil and filter change. And for the first time since owning my 83 1100 I put in Castrol 20w50. I normally run Castrol 10w40. I figured it might help a few things out. When I take off now I don't get that chattering that I was getting. It shifts a lot smoother and is noticeably quieter. I live in Michigan so I figured I could get away with that viscosity. This summer has really been a warm one. I'm happy :D As a side note I did have to order a new oil filter bolt. Those things strip so easy at the head of the bolt. Got it through Dennis Kirk for 21 bucks to the door.

when I still owned a 1200 wing I put amsoil 10w 40 in it and mobil 1 10w 40 in my 1500 wing. lets just say that synthetic oil didn't play well in either wing so I went back to castrol. with my ST 1300 I used t6 rotella for a couple of oil changes, shifting was very clunky so I switched to castrol in it also. like you i'm in Michigan and have 20w 50 in the ST 1300 wihich will be changed to 10w 40 on my next oil change

My 1100 has a bit of a wrist pin knock, been knocking since I got it on the road in '05, 50k miles later (now at 101K miles) it still knocks. So one time I tried some 20W-50 to see if that would quiet the knock any. Well, it did quiet it some, but the starter sprag clutch didn't like it one bit! On the colder mornings it was hit-or-miss as to whether or not the starter would engage, or just free-spin.....

Little update. Couple of 35* mornings and it spun right up and started. 8-)
