single carb installed

Post by bardlover »

I have an 81 standard with a single carb conversion that I just picked up. Don't think it's set up properly. It has a high idle, 2500, using a lot of fuel and the manifold is frosting up,a lot of condensation. I checked the tightness of the manifold bolts and boot clamps. Tighten the boots a bit but no change. Any Ideas?

Jetting issues??? adjust idle screw? Icing is a "common" issues with single carbs..do a search on icing and see what pops up.

I was restoring my '83 Aspencade, and wanted to put a single carb on. Had same issue. WAY TOO MUCH fuel. Gave up trying to adjust that bugger.
So, I sent out my OEM carbs to Pistol Pete to be rebuilt. Works perfect now.

HOWEVER.......I found out, just after I put the OEM's back on, that my FUEL PUMP was shot. Check to see if you have a leaking fuel pump. The diaphragm in mine was filled with hairline cracks. Started leaking bad when I got the bike started. Replaced it.......everything runs perfect.

I'm thinking my single carb conversion didn't work out because the fuel pump wasn't working properly in the first place. Who knows..? It's worth a look though.
And fuel pumps are pretty a pretty cheap fix.......IF that's the issue.
It's not WHAT you ride......it's THAT you ride.

How. Of mine told me to look into a pressure regulator for the fuel pump. He said it should be about 3psi. Sound familiar? Also o-rings on the intake manifold.

If you are handy with tubing, people have re-routed the coolant return from the cylinder heads thru copper tubing soldered or otherwise attached to the manifold for warming both the manifold and carburetor bypassing the straight coolant tubes to the thermostat housing...
