i have one that's quite badly gummed up. have spares that i can use but still would like to know if anyone has ever done this and gotten away with it.

Depends what you boil it in. The temperature of boiling water won't hurt them.

i was thinking of using white vinegar, but it's good to know that they can handle boiling water.
thanks.

that is always safe, and being acidic, will do a better job that just water.

IF,
you have access to an UltraSonic cleaner, put the vinegar in the pan, and leave the parts in that for a good long while, amazing results, comes out looking like brand new.

this gadget is worth every penny you pay for it.
it will clean the idle jet and circuit passages in carbs

here in canada, princess auto is our equivalent to harbor freight. they don't carry any ultrasonic cleaners.
i just emailed them asking whether they plan to stock them anytime soon; i hope that other canadians reading this will do the same.
canada needs cleaner carbs.
meanwhile, batch #1 is on the boil.
