The bearings are staked in place:

So while it's not impossible to rebuild, it's certainly not easy. You have to drill out each stake, press out the old bearings/joint, and press in a new one. It's something best left to a shop that specializes in universal joints, and has the proper machining equipment and jigs.

Back when Honda ran out of GL1500 U-joints for a year or so, there were a few people online who were rebuilding/selling used ones with new bearings/joints in them (they are made the same way) but once Honda found a new supplier, I haven't seen much talk about rebuilding them anymore.

That said, it's been many years since Honda had the GL1100 U-joints available. So your choices are either a used one, or to rebuild one.

Incidentally, if yours is worn enough that there has been metal-to-metal contact between the two halves (look for smooth, shiny metal), then you need to look for a replacement.

actually I have a friend that has a machine shop that specializes in driveshafts, does a lot of spline work. ships them all over the world. shop is just around the hill from me. i'll check with him and see what he can do. mines not bad, at least I don't think it is, just wanted to replace it while the bike is tore down. thanks for the info!
