oil from weep hole!?oil pressure too high?

Post by ernest rudshtein »

80 gl. noticed some oil coming out the weep hole.
seems the back o-ring on the pump failed.did a coolent change- pump seems fine, no rattle.
whats my next move? change the pump? order a gasket kit and rebuild? can it be fixed otherwise?
in addition, i have seales failing one after the other.neutral switch. valve cover bolt seal, valve cover seal, shift lever seal , possibly front cam seals.
i have high oil consumption now (ordered new valve guide seals to try and address the problem).
do failed valve guide seal can affect oil pressure so much that the seals start to fail?
breather seems to operate fine ( line is clear and clean, the breather valve seals when i blow air in it).
tnx

Sounds to me like the crankcase breather is plugged. I had one plugged up once, leaked everywhere, has nothing to do with oil pressure. Run the engine and remove the oil filler cap, does it release pressure?

Beware if you do that, It'll fling oil everywhere (ask me how I know that  ). Just loosen it.

what do you mean by ,release pressure? how will i diagnose "pressure being released" on a running engine?
ill just see oil splashing probably, no?
i wrote that if i blow air in the valve plastic tube( with my mouth yeah), it doesnt let air in (as in PCV systems i have checked, this is the oldschool trick to check breather valves).
lets say i unscrew the oil filler cap. what should i expect if the system is healthy, and what if there is too much presure? (as you guys suggested- a blocked cranckcase breather)
tnx for the help.

Dave ,you mean run the engine and shut it down before opening the oil cap? :?
p.s
by writing oil pressure in the topic, i of course meant cranckcase pressure, overall.

Either way, but be quick about removing the cap if you shut it off, wouldn't take long for the pressure to go away. Another way would be to pull the hose off the vent while the engine is running and feel for pressure coming out there, it should build pressure if you hole your finger on the vent.

iss the valve the only escape hatch of the pressure from the cranckcase?
ill post a video tomorrow showing results
thanks

There is no valve in it that I am aware of. Yes it is the only pressure relief.

if its not a valve how does it operate? whats keeping air from being sucked in, instead of being pushed out?
can i ask for a cleaning method? if blocked, how do i address the problem? does the breather detach from the cranckcase or is it permanent?
thanks

It is not a valve, it is just an open vent and it does not come out. If you can not blow air into it it is plugged. Try using a mirror to look into it.

coo
ill give it a try see what turns up.
ill run a compression test to see if it the rings or the valve guide seals.
thanks for the help

so the pressure relief seems to work fine.pulled the pipe, closed it with my thumb, builds pressure and releases it.
the only note is that the engine was dead cold (2 days without cranking it) and it gave some pressure strait on start up.is that normal?
if not, should i try it with a working temperature engine? :ugeek:

It is probably going to have more blowby when cold but there is always going to be some pressure. I guess your leaks are just bad seals.
