what is the purpose of the alignment marks on the oil filter housing ?
on wing1 i was careful to align them but on wing2 i didn't bother as it was getting cold and dark and i didn't see the point.
is wing2 going to self-destruct now ?

Re: oil filter housing alignment
They are to prevent vibration from loosening the oil filter cover, which could cause oil loss (directly inline with your rear wheel).

Re: oil filter housing alignment
They don't have to be exactly aligned, there is a little wiggle room, but if you will look at the filter can on 1 side there are no ridges, this goes toward the water pump cover. If you get it turned to where the ribs are against the water pump cover the can won't seat properly.

Re: oil filter housing alignment
thanks for the replies.
i did think that they were there to keep it from turning, but it seemed to me that on wing2 i was able to turn it past the "keeper" .
anyway, the weather is decent enough today that i can have a look at it.
