Why am I not getting power?

Post by Phantom6914 » Fri Jan 18, 2019 10:48 am

Please help. This is my first wing and I'm trying to get it ready for the upcoming season. I have installed a new battery that has passed load test, new starter that has passed bench test, new positive cable and new solenoid. I have also taken off and cleaned the ground behind the triangle mount and other contact points. When I push the button to start all I get is a click. I also can't jump the solenoid, nothing happens. However I can use jumper cables and spin the starter by going direct battery to starter and by going battery to starter cable on the solenoid. I'm not getting power through solenoid to the starter cable side when I push the button. Could it be in the switch or where should I look?

First off...tell what your bike is in the original post. Edit while you can(@24 hrs from posting)
You need to put in what bike with every new topic.

Yes you need to test the switch and the wiring going to the solenoid from the switch.
You need to verify volts at the battery, key off, key on and when you hit the button.

So you say it won't work if you jumper the terminals on the solenoid but will if you jump direct from the battery to the starter terminal on the solenoid? That indicates the + battery cable is bad.

I have replaced the positive battery cable. I have power going to the solenoid and rest of the bike is powered but no power to starter cable side of the solenoid when button is pushed. Just clicks. I'm planning on checking volts this afternoon. I'll post the results this evening.

Ok.I did a read through...
Quick test...
Voltmeter attached to the frame and probe the threaded stud on the starter where the power wire is attached..Is there volts when you push the start button?.
If none..move to the threaded stud on the starter solenoid (starter side)..same test..Is there volts?
If none..move to the battery side of the solenoid..same test..
Where is there no volts..
Process of elimination.Work your way from the starter STUD (not the wire)back toward the battery.
