Seafoam is a cleaner for carbs and engines that comes in liquid pour cans or spray. It works good for cleaning carb jets and fuel injectors. Walmart and most auto part stores carry it.

Mine did the same thing, yet it was the starter planetary gears, they turned to gravel.

When you think about it, it's kind of reassuring that the gearhead is the weakest point of the starting system.
I would far prefer to replace a starter (or the gearhead of a starter) than to have to open the engine and replace a sheared starter drive or chain or sprag clutch.

Mine did that yesterday. Is your bike in a heated environment? If not then it could be the cold. Put a heat source next to the starter (100 watt light bulb) The tabs on the starter get dry and cold and will not open up to catch the gears to start. Once the bike starts those tabs retract.

The sprags on the starter clutch should grab regardless of the temperature. If they are not, you have some sludge in there, and the sludge (when cold and stuff) prevents them from moving. Cleaning out the sludge will fix the problem and allow the bike to start no matter the temperature.Wilcoy02 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 10:45 am Mine did that yesterday. The easiest way is to use Seafoam in your oil. It works as a solvent and dissolves the sludge. On my 1100 I added one can of Seafoam to the crankcase, then rode the bike gently for 100 miles or so, to get it really good and hot. Then I drained the oil, and clumps of sludge came out. Another quick oil change, ran it some more, then drained it again. Problem solved.

Always used Marvel Mystery oil to fix it. Drain a quart and add a quart of MMO and drive 1-200 miles then change oil.

Re: starter that whizzzzzez
Thank you all for the info. I did put seafoam in the oil and it did start up. I let it run for a long time. Now I plan on draining the oil and putting in fresh. It's very cold here in Poplar Grove, Il. so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Did put a heater on it and she popped off like a champ. TY very much. Kirny1
