My New to me 1983 GL1100 Aspencade Build

Post by wmpotter399 » Fri Mar 01, 2019 3:39 pm

Hey everyone. I wanted to introduce myself. My name is WIll. I currently live at the northern tip of what is known as The Jersey Shore. At the very beginning of fall last year, I seen a deal that I could not pass up. A 1983 Gl1100 Aspencade. I was just telling my wife one night that I wanted a bigger bike. My current was a 1986 Honda Shadow VT700. I told her I wanted a full dress Goldwing if I could find one at the right price. The next morning, I am looking on Ebay for accessories for the Shadow. I decide to type in Goldwing. I see this 83 GL1100. The guy pointed out a long list of things wrong with it. Including the fact that he bought it at a storage auction. He was able to get it running, but it wouldn't start anymore. He wanted $800 or best offer. Me, being the Jerk that I am, I offered him $50. I have rebuilt enough bikes to know what it takes to get one running the right way. But honestly, when I offered him $50, I didn't expect a response. Was kinda doing it more for fun that anything. To my surprise, about an hour later, he countered my offer. He wanted $100. Now I am not a genius, But even I knew that the bike was worth 10 times that in parts. So, that weekend, I drove almost 200 miles each way to get this bike. When I got there, it had this HORRIBLE noise when you push the starter button. I am sure all of you have either heard it or read about it. I paid for the bike, got the paperwork and when the guy asked if wanted help pushing it onto the trailer, I said it was OK. I would ride it on. He looked at me like I was crazy. I turned the key, pulled the clutch, put it in 1st gear, started pushing down the driveway and popped the clutch. I think it really p@#$d him off when it started. But.... oh well.

OK. So I get the bike home. The whole way home I am running through my head all the things I wanted to do with it. Color change. Go through the engine. So, apart it came. And the engine came out. AND OH BOY. I would love to meet the person that did some of the stuff to this bike. I guess whoever tried to do rear brakes last. The must have broken off the bolt in the caliper bracket. SO instead of fixing it, they left the caliper off. Cut the brake hose and shoved a bolt in the hose and clamped it. Got love some people. Then I started paint removal. WOW. Thats all I can say. Little to no prep work was done before the last paint. I used an air hose to remove the paint from the back side of the saddle bags. Incredible. Then. The hand painted pin striping. OVER THE FACTORY PIN STRIPING. Yes. They sprayed over the factory pin striping and then hand painted a stripe over it. on EVERY PANEL. But it is all smooth plastic now. A majority was painted a few days ago. I will attach some pics.

Engine was pulled and taken apart. Got a new clutch, stator, starter clutch rebuild kit, new timing belts, seals, thermostat, gaskets, all the goodies. Reassembly has already been started on the engine. Still waiting for the top end gasket set. Hoping to get back end together and get it back in the frame this weekend. We will see.

The color is actually pitch black with a red pearl added. The flash doesn't let the black show.
