as the title suggests, me and my brother are piecing together the remains of an '81 wing i stripped for parts last summer, plus a lot of stuff from a crashed '82 aspencade that i got recently for $50, plus a bit of stuff from an '81 cb900 that i picked up for free (no engine and the frame was chopped up). i didn't quite have enough tupperware to make a complete bike, and since i already have 2 interstates with fairing and all luggage i decided it would be cool to have a naked.

my brother is pretty good at figgerin' things out and wrenching (thanks bro) but we will likely be needing some help along the way so i am starting this thread ...

here you can see we forgot to mount the headlight ears and had a lot of trouble re-installing the forks when we did so ; cost us a lot of time.

here we have the headlight ears mounted and have hung quite a few other parts on it as well.

timing belts are on order.

the only parts that i need that i couldn't find in my inventory are a throttle push cable (both spares rusted and broken upon examination), and, oddly enough, i don't seem to have a mounting bracket for the choke. i am sure there will be other snags as we go along but so far, so good.

the aspencade was a GREAT buy for $50 ... out of it came an excellent seat, a motor that runs fantastic (after thorough carb cleaning) and a bunch of extra parts.
the interstate contributed the frame, forks, a very good fuel tank, and a lot of other stuff.
the cb900's main contributions were headlight, ears for same, and an ignition lock WITH key ... yay !

looking more like a goldwing all the time ... timing belts are installed ... SO easy when the front end is wide open like that.

we spent a crazy amount of time sorting out horn (bad switch) and turn signals. as bad as it looks, this (socket for the left front turn signal bulb) was NOT the problem ...

turned out to be a weak ground at the rear turn signals. what confused us was that on the first test, they WORKED.

found this thin copper or brass wafer under the thumb actuator knob for the headlight hi-lo switch. actually broke two of the actuator knobs during installation before deciding to NOT put this back underneath it. what is it for ? it does not make an electrical connection, it only contacts plastic

If I remember correctly, I believe it just provides friction and detents when sliding the switch up and down. It likely also helps keep dust and grit out of the switch innards.

95% complete ...

still to do :

1) get front brakes squared away. wide open to your suggestions here. no more air coming out when bleeding but the lever still touches the handgrip (barely) and the brakes will pump up noticeably with a 2nd squeeze. tried tying the lever back overnight; didn't fix the issue.

2) remove and clean up the starter; seems to be a bad spot.

3) carbs will want to be synced.

keeping my eye out for a 2nd horn (out of 3 parts bikes i had 1 good horn and, to my great surprise, 2 bad ones. since when do horns fail ?) and a decent seat.

not going to win any beauty contests, but not too bad for being assembled from spare parts and i kinda like the colour and i think i might like having a naked wing.

I am thinking that you either have to rebuild the master cylinder or buy a new one. I just went through the bleeding on my 78Gl1000 but couldn't get a firm feel on the brake lever, the lever also would also come back to the handlebar. This after 2 afternoons of trying almost every remedy known to mankind. Finally ordered a master cylinder off Amazon.ca for the sum of $39 free shipping and to my amazement it worked after the first install and bleed session. Make sure you buy the master cylinder with the 16mm (15.8 mm) bore as the 14 mm sized ones are undersized and don't do the job for a bike with two front calipers. The one I ended up purchasing was:

joneszy ... bang on with the master cylinder needing rebuild/replacement.

i am running into trouble trying to source one, however. the kits that i am seeing are for the piston/spring/seal but my leak is definitely at the o-ring between the plastic fluid reservoir and the cast aluminum section. i want to buy a complete kit that includes that o-ring or, better yet, a complete assembly.

p.s. that link doesn't seem to work and, at any rate, it's probably for a gl1000 ?

thanks.

I did indeed install it on my 78 gl1000 but think it would work equally as well on an 1100. There is a very similar MC on my 1100. The PO had installed it so I do not know where it came from (It works well too). The handlebar size (7/8") is the same and I believe the banjo fittings match as well. Don't know what happened to the link it was made in China/Taiwan and shipped by a company called Cosey (others sell the same thing)but try a search on Amazon or Ebay for 16 mm gl1100 master cylinder. In any event should you go this route as said before make sure you are buying one with a 16 mm bore which supplies additional brake fluid volume. Made in China/Taiwan but there are a few others on the NGW (the Naked Goldwing if you aren't familiar) site that have used these master cylinders with success.

That ink apparently only works in Canada - it's a new master cylinder being sold on amazon.ca as a replaement for GL1000 and GL1100's.

weird ... i am in canada, but still the link doesn't work for me.
regardless, "16mm" was the key to a successful search. looks like there are plenty available.
thank you both.
