Bogs when clutch released.

Post by Phantom6914 »

I have an 81 GL1100. It has sit for several years and I finally got it running. Today was the first time I've ever actually gotten to ride it! However new problems have arose. I've ran seafoam through it, oil change, blew out air filter, new starter and solenoid, plugs, idle adjusted (1,000rpm), etc. Runs great, however when taking off in 1st from a stop it bogs, knocks and tries to die if rpm drops under 2,000rpm. Also knocks in 2nd til you're over 2,000 rpms. Additionally it wont go over 35mph in 3rd even at full throttle. Lastly my headlight doesnt work but all others do. It registers high beam is on when it's not and no headlight at all. I suspect wiring issue, how I'm terrible with electrical. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to bikes and riding so I'm a little lost.

Your main jets and idle jets probably need a good clean, and your carbs will need to be synchronised.

Electrical just sounds like a blown bulb if everything else is working.

What's likely hood of both low and high just randomly going out one day? Carbs have been synced. Its almost as if it's under excessive load. Going to pull calipers and see if shes sticking.

You may have lost the ground connection to the headlight (ground is common for both high and low beam).

Re the bogging, I agree with Aussie81Interstate, but also check the float levels in the carbs.

The carbs are in need cleaning and rebuilding. Seafoam can't get into all the fuel ports and passages if they are totally clogged and not into the air passages at all.

Will I do any damage riding it just around town til I can afford to rebuild the carbs? I've dumped all my "extra" money into just getting it to where she is now? Furthermore can you tell me where the headlight grounds at?

Update. Brake calipers were sticking causing excess load. Rebuilt all 3 calipers and got her up to 65. Still going to have carbs done. No change as of yet with headlight issue.

Carbs were rebuilt and synced. Still knocks when taking off and at idle. However smooth during acceleration with no knock or hesitation.
Only at idle around 1,000rpms or less. Headlight issue is resolved ( it was the bulb). Brakes are still having issues. Probably needing to replace the original lines and get new calipers.

I hate to say it, but the taking off and at idle knocking is indicative of fuelling/carb sync still not being perfect.
