Hey all. Thought I'd ad this in case anyone was doing a search on coil troubles.
I have a low mileage 1980 1100i in nice shape. Had it about a year. I have been chasing a miss/poor low speed/studder at high load/poor MPG problem since day 1. This past year I checked or replaced just about everything but the problem remained. Early on I replaced the coils with "Caltric" coils ($50 for the pair. Amazon. Advertised as Goldwing 1100 replacement coils.) because 1 of the coils read as open on the secondary side. And the problem felt electrical to me. Thought for sure that would solve the problem, seeing as one of the coils showed open.
But still had the problem. Continued to check everything I could think of. A year later and still no luck, but it still felt electrical to me. Recently I heard about using a Dodge Neon coil. So I gave it a try. After the install the change was like night and day. Started instantly, idled as it should, pulled to the redline in the first 4 gears (I let off in 5th, was going too fast!) and just ran as a classic Goldwing should--smooth as silk.
I've read on the forums that Mother Honda no longer sells OEM coils. The affordable aftermarket coils, like the Caltric I tried (China) are junk. eBay has many listings for used stock coils. At almost 40 years old who wants those?
Bottom line--Dodge Neon Coil looks like a pretty good alternative.

I did the same thing. It does make a noticeable difference on startup and on low end power. Reset spark gap to 35 , it makes a difference. Regards, Johnny
