poor boy conversion

Post by Chewy »

Is there anyone that sells, or know of anyone that sells, the valve covers and bolts to do this conversion? I mean with the valve covers already having the hole, and the crank bolt.

Thanks in advance.

It is not that tough to cut the hole. I have not seen any one selling the cvrs with the hole. Cheaper to buy a bit to cut the hole than to spend money on shipping the cvr.

I'm nervous that if I try it, I'll screw it up.

You can not screw it up. Some ride bikes with the covers off the bike.

Nervous is understandable, and also okay.

Remember to breathe. Measure a bunch of times before you drill. You can do it.

What is the worst thing that can happen? Your hole is off a bit and you enlarge it a little?

Keep us posted on your progress please.

Chewy, you just had the engine open to fix the starter clutch and confirmed a nice shiny-new looking stator, why do you want to do this?

The 1100 stock stator has enough output I can power the the extra lighting on the Vetter trunk, plus a trailer (all lighting standard bulbs, no LED's anywhere) and a 60 watt stereo. Never found myself short of power.

I've replaced the stator twice, first time in '06 burned out due to those stupid connectors in the stator wires (I solder them now) and recently in '16 - this time the center bolt holding the magnetic rotor had worked itself loose allowing the rotor to slide on the shaft and grind on the stator windings. This stator after 10 years showed absolutely no evidence of any heat damage, and had it not been ground up by the rotor would still be in there today!

I have thought about running a small amp to power the speakers, maybe a sub. Plus, if did the poor boy kit, it's easier to change an alt, than pull the engine if the stator goes bad.

You can power a small amp for the speakers (mine is 60 watt) just fine with the stock stator, but if you add a subwoofer you'll need the additional juice. Subwoofers EAT power!
