Gl1100A 1983 timing belt Question

Post by hestandt »

I am in the process of changing my water pump. I pulled the radiator and was also going to change the timing belts, I have had this bike since 2000 and have made made many trips to Daytona, Key West, Strugis, and other. My question is I pulled the covers off of the timing belt and the belts look like NEW and in good shape. Not really sure about changing them and getting it right. What are the opinions of the Group???????????

Change them! They rarely look anything other than perfectly serviceable... Until one breaks. Just based on the amount of time you have owned the bike, they are overdue.

I'm with Maz, change them. Its cheap insurance and very easy to do. Just follow the service manual and you wont have any problems. I was nervous on the first one I did and have done several since then.

Famous last words: "But they look brand new". I am guilty as well. 2 new exhaust valves later.

you have already done the majority of the work, and if you follow the service manual it's actually pretty hard to get it wrong.
buy gates t274 or napa belts rather than a "honda" belt and save big money.

I just changed them on my 82, it wasn't to bad except I think I have to pull the covers again. Its making a weird sound at a specific rpm and from what I have read I may have the tensioners to tight.... Oh well live and learn.... anyone know if I can pull the covers without moving the rad?

Yes...but you will skin a lot of knuckles, lose a bunch of blood, and go broke paying the swear jar doing it. Ask me how I know. :) Save some time and pull the rad. :)
