Fuel injection

Post by Chewy »

Can't remember where, but it seems I ran across a post about a guy fitting fuel injection to a goldwing. Dont remember what year or anything like that.

1. Is it doable for fairly cheap?

2. How difficult would it be?

3. What setup would be the best to use? Make, model, year, etc.

It is doable? Yes. Is it cheap or easy? Definitely not either.

Some people have tried implementing the Megasquirt ECU with injectors, with some success. Creating the mapping is the toughest part, and takes a ton of research, trial and error.

Quite a few people have started out projects to create a fuel injection "kit" to sell for various models of Goldwings over the years, but every one have have given up when confronted with the cost and complexity.

Here's a GL100 with a Megasquirt:

I know there is a GL1500 owner in Phoenix who spent 3 years developing a fuel injection manifold and software/mapping to drive it, and while it was mostly rideable, he gave up after the three years.

yes,
I have followed both of those two guys.

neither came up with a totally smooth, rideable injection setup.

if the factory doesn't provide it, you are doomed to an immense amount of $$$, and hours, and no guarantee of the outcome.

I bought a '74 454ci Suburban brand new.
the Quadrajet was a horrendous piece of junk.
so, being a geek, I bought the brand new at the time, Fuel Injection conversion kit.

it ran okay, sort of, lost all of the bottom end torque, and was only usuable thru the middle RPM range..... Once you really needed that Deep Down grunt that a 454 can provide, it just was not there. not near enough air flow.... it was said to work good on a 283, slightly good on the 350s, but not worth a damn on a 454.

I ran it for 10 years, and finally sold the truck with 220,000 miles on it.
but, at the time, I worked in the oil patch and used "Drip Gas" which drops out of a Natural Gas pipeline every few miles..... we pumped it out of the drip tanks, and hauled it to the refinery..... us workers burned that stuff for decades before the feds got mad enough to make it a felony. had to retard the ignition about 4 degrees on the 454.

the Octane rating was piss poor, hence retarding the spark.
but hey! it was free.... 220,000 miles and never bought a tank of gas, unless I was out of state on vacation.
