82 gl1100i CARB SYNC

Post by OTTERCOMET »

ONCE AGAIN
Idling just below 1000 and up to full operating temp (fan cycles on and off).
Bike starts easily and idles fine on and off choke.
Twisting the throttle either quickly or slowly, there is no noticeable hesitation or stumble.
This has been a project bike and I have yet to road test it to determine if any problems occur when engine is under load.
Carbs were rebuilt. When first started after rebuild, it was running rich. Forum members advised that I did not have the floats properly adjusted so I removed the carbs and redid the float adjustment - running rich corrected!
Using a single gauge - same type as Wingman uses in the HOW TO SYNC YOUR CARBS" I just have to ;move it from carb to carb.
#3 registers 11" and #1 is matched to that.
#2 and #4 are matched at 14".
No amount of adjustment of screw on #4 will move the gauge towards the 11" mark. Moving the screw on #4 does not cause any change.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Two thoughts... the adjuster screw on mine was stripped. I could turn it but it didn't actually move the mechanism.... secondly, are the #2 & #4 butterflies actually at rest against the carb throat? They might be so far closed that the adjuster has to go a long way to get them to start moving at all.
These are just guesses, good luck.

You probably need to do a static bench sync in order to get all 4 carb butterflies as close as possible before doing the sync with the gauge. I don't know if there is a how to here but there are vids on youtube.

Hi. Just wanted ring in on the carb sync issue. Did you first sync each vacuum gauge individually to the #3 carb before you began? If this isn't done first, the syncing process won't work. You probably know this, just thought id throw my two cents in. :) hope it works out. Jim

He's using a single gauge. I use a single gauge and can get all of my carbs to sync....something else is going on with his carbs.
