Aftermarket Speedometer Error (electrical issues)

Post by KevinC »

Hello all, new here. I'm attaching a video of an issue I'm having, hope it works. I shut my 82 gl1100 off to get gas, when I turned the key back to the on position the cluster did not turn on and with a voltmeter I couldn't find power anywhere except the battery. After 10 minutes of checking connections, reconnecting battery, turning key, and playing with killswitch the bike finally turned on and seemed to start fine. Then I noticed the speedometer was acting funny as you will see in the video. The temp gauge flashes before starting and once started the tach reads high. If I apply throttle rhe engine will sputter and seem to backfire.
I found one shoddy connection in the wires behind the headlight and fixed it, didn't seem to be the problem. Couldn't find any other loose connections or bare wire where something might be shorting out. At a loss here and hoping somebody has experience with these universal speedos, maybe the temp gauge flashing is trying to tell me something, and also the high rpm reading. Thanks.
TLDR; Aftermarket speedo flashing and reading high rpm, bike sputters and backfires when throttle is applied.

For anyone who finds this in a future search, cleaned up all the connections on the starter solenoid, which is located just aft of the battery. Both the main lugs and the fuse terminals. Problem seems to have gone away.

Hey Kevin glad to hear you got things going OK. I have a buddy who is looking for a similar unit. Can you tell me the brand and where you purchased the unit?

For the cluster/speedometer? It's an off brand that came with the bike. I can probably find a link for you, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks I appreciate your candor. Some of these aftermarket instrument pods are a crap shoot.
