mystery black box

Post by gerald collins »

Hi, I'm restoring a 1981 Interstate, and it has a small black box about 2" x 2" x 3/4 " which has a 9 pin connector attached to it. It sits on top of the regulator/rectifier, and it burned itself up--smoke and stench and all that. I can't find it in the wiring diagram or in the shop manual. Can anyone tell me what it is and where I can get a replacement?
Many thanks, Gerald in Atlanta

I was going to guess the neutral diode until you said it had a 9 pin connector. Can you post a picture of it?

Sounds like the CDI igniter.
Does it look something like this?

It does sound like an ignitor, and it's the right number of pins...but not located where he said it was.
