1982 GL1100 appears to have a lean popping at exhaust

Post by Sjl74 »

Hi everyone. I have recently built a GL1100 bobber. The stock intake was removed and a plate was made with a 2” hole for a clamp on k&n filter to clamp on to. The exhaust was what I believe to be a jardine system. The baffle system was cut in half with only one section of baffling now. The carbs have been totally disassembled and ultrasonic cleaned. New air cut off valves. Carbs synced with gauges. The bike starts and idles good. It pulls hard and clean down the road. I get some decel popping and also exhaust popping with bike in neutral holding revs steady from 1/4 to half throttle. It seems to be more on the right side of engine. Plugs are clean and pretty much on the white side. With the right side being whiter than left. Wondering if I need to rejet or shim the main needle a little ? Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried running the engine without that intake on?

No I have not. I noticed the morning while in first gear cruising with throttle just cracked open, the engine was missing and popping a little, so I slowly started to pull the choke out and it smoothed the engine out. I think I need a bigger pilot or shim needle

Or you low jets (idle jets) are partially blocked. /Mine dids the same thing and I eventually replaced the low jet (idle) with the same but new... all fixed.

I put #40 pilot jets in today. Stock size is #35. Honda shop only had 40 in stock. It runs much better so far. Time will tell if it’s going to be to rich. I’ll have to drop to #38 maybe if it seems to rich.
