81 GL1100 no start

Post by Iamsamrogers »

Hey guys!
So I just picked up a 1981 Naked GL1100 and when I got it, the wiring harness was pulled.

Since the harness was already out, I went through and took the tape off and made sure there were no shorts, or anything that could go bad with it and everything seemed just fine, I fixed a few connections that were done poorly, and when I tried to re install the harness into the bike (every plug is in the right spot, that I know) and no I have no power what so ever at the gauges, the horn, headlight, or starter button. Like I have voltage, and ground, but nothing happens as I turn the key, or anything. :/

I can get the bike started, but only for about 3 seconds, and it’s only when I jump the solenoid posts.

I’ve gotten a new starter solenoid, i’ve Checked all
The fuses, and I know the headlight bulb works, as i’ve bench Tested it on a 12 v battery.

Any ideas as to why it won’t start? I need all the help I can get.

Pretty good looking naked there....

This Link may help. A color Schematic for a 1983 STD, pretty much same as an 81. I don't think an '81 has turn signal "auto-cancel", but this schematic should be otherwise correct and enough to get you going.

With key "on" check for power at the four left fuses under the shelter. These get power from the ignition switch. If no power check red wire at ignition switch. The red wire gets "always on" battery power from the main 30A fuse at the starter relay. If no power at the ignition switch you've pretty much narrowed it down to the main fuse or wiring at the starter relay.

Helps to click on the schematic so you can view large size then right click on that and download the .JPG file instead of viewing it in the browser, that way you can zoom in on areas of interest.

Welcome to the forum. Good looking bike.
Why was the harness pulled by the PO? Looks like a problem with the ignition switch. If you have voltage going to the switch, but no voltage coming out (measured at the fuse block), then the switch itself is suspect.
Edit: I didn't see Denver's post while I was posting. Good info.
Check for this simple solution... The two power wires at the solenoid (batt & starter motor) are swapped. This might explain how you got ignition power for those few seconds while jumped.

That’s awesome! Not too far at all... and yeah, I visited Longmont a few times a couple years ago, and then moved here back in January... very different place now, that’s for sure

Hey, so I checked voltage at the red wire at the ignition switch, and I don’t have any voltage going through the red wire from the neg terminal on battery, but I do have continuity through them... I switched the solenoid around (I did have it backwards but no change) and all of my fuses have power all the time (the 4 left ones) and my right two (Acc and Parking) only have power when key is on... i’m Confused

The other end of the red wire at the ign switch is at the Starter relay, gets its power thru the 30 amp main fuse plugged into the relay cap, other side of the fuse gets power thru internal wiring from the big battery side connection on the relay. So should have always-on power in the red wire.

Don't know how you are getting "always-on" power to the left four fuses, your headlight and running lights and the ignition will be "always on". The fuses should be getting power from the black wire on the ignition switch (powered by the red wire when you turn the switch on).

Be sure when you are measuring power that the neg lead of your meter is either on battery neg, or even better a good ground on the engine.

Recheck your readings, it sounds like something is crossed somewhere.

Excellent! Glad you got 'er going.

If you don't know when the timing belts were last changed I'd consider doing that right away. Gates T-274 belts (same as OEM) are available from Amazon for about $17 each....
