If you don't find fuel leaking outside the engine check inside. The fuel pump diaphragm may have a pinhole allowing fuel down the fuel pump actuating lever, draining into the head and ultimately into the oil. Quick check is see if your oil looks overfilled and smells like gas....

Not sure but I think fuel pump parts are still available....

Famous last words: "The carbs were rebuilt." There are almost no qualified GL carb re-builders. Chances are very good that whoever did the rebuild missed something. For instance exact float adjustments. They are critical, close doesn't count. That is just one possibility. Pull and check the plugs. Probably black and sooty.

With that amount of fuel being used, if it was a leak, you would be smelling it. So it's getting burned, which most likely means one of two things:

- Fuel pump is massively - and I mean MASSIVELY overpressurizing the fuel system
- Float valves leaky/incorrectly set

Being that you just had carb work done, the probability of it being the second one is going to be pretty near 100%.

One other thing to check: Have a look at your oil level, make sure it is correct, and that your crankcase isn't full of fuel.

I'm thinking bad fuel gauge or fuel pump. Pistol Pete runs every carb rack on a test engine before shipping. Plus, if that was going through the engine your plugs would be fully fouled.

If the shipper tossed the box of carbs around roughly it could easily knock the float settings off. So Pete could have tested them and they ran good on his test engine, but got to you out of spec. It would take a pretty good drop of the box, but I think I recall a set of 1100’s this happened to. Not too difficult to check float heights.

I would think a whiff of the exhaust would tell you it’s rich.
