Bike won't fire

Post by MamaBoo »

I have a 1983 goldwing interstate. She only has 28000 original miles. I love her. So here is our problem we replaced the starter, new battery I rode her around the neighborhood a few times and she hasn't cranked since. She is firing but not catching. We also drained all old fuel out and put fresh in. What is next can't find anyone in central Alabama that is willing to work on it. Hubby has a 08 but it's to heavy for me and I can't reach the ground. We put a trike kit on mine because of bad knee. I might be 64 but I still want to ride my own. Not willing to go in debt for another cause not sure how much longer I will ride.

have you looked after the basics ? ... remove spark plugs ... check for spark, check condition and gap. remove and inspect air filter. loosen float bowl drain screws and check for the presence of fuel in each bowl. if you have spark , air and fuel then it's time to move on to compression.

Have you checked if the kill switch is "on"?

Age 64 is young... don't give up too soon.
Your description is somewhat confusing.
Cranking implies the starter motor is turning the engine over, at sufficient speed to enable starting.
Firing implies there is some combustion action that is assisting the starter motor and giving indications that it wants to start (perhaps not all cylinders).
Catching implies the engine can/is running on its own without help from the starter, even if it's sputtering, or dies soon after.
I am not criticizing your vocabulary, but the motor-heads here need clear descriptions to assist diagnosis. And we're here to help, whatever your own mechanical skills might be.
The above responders gave good advice. But if you need more specific info, please try to clarify your symptoms.

Sometimes it's beneficial to post a u-tube video link showing what happens.
I've done this many times.A picture(video) is worth a thousand words.
It sometimes can be easier to show the problem rather than describe it.
I'm sure "we" as a collective people can give good things to check to isolate your troubles.
Keep us posted.

Has new plugs but will check everything you guys have suggested when we get home over the weekend. We are shade tree mechanics...lol. If I could find somebody to work on it I would. To Young to give up riding to old to go in debt for another one.

My 1200 wouldn't start running once like that too...I told my wife that I was just testing the starter/battery...
I said that right after she mentioned that I had the fuel lever turned off.
