I just bought a 1982 GL 1100A with 48k miles on it. The second owner I bought it from had put 1700 mi on it in the last 3 years.
Bodywork and paint are in excellent shape.
Previous owner did not know when the cam timing belts had last been changed (I felt like he didn’t really know much about early Wings) so I assume I need to make timing belts a maintenance priority, correct?
When I pulled the boxes off I discovered the driveshaft side was completely covered in oily black dust. Everything around the right side of the wheel is filthy. The left side is pristine except for some dust.
Is this an expected condition or do I have a problem?
Also the air shock on the right has a torn boot, left side looks nearly new.
Thanks for any guidance y’all can provide, I don’t want to ruin a beautiful motorcycle!

Re: 1982 Aspencade Maintenance
Welcome to the forum.
Can't help with the torn boot. Don't know if dealers have them... but probably can find somewhere on e-bay.
Right side rear oily dust. The drive unit on the rear hub has a vent near the top. Due to temperature cycles (they do run warm when in use) oily vapors come out this vent. Might be worse if it was over-filled. It is good to drain/refill anyway. If you are doing a thorough check-out of the bike, you should pull the rear wheel to check bearings, and the final drive splines (needs high moly grease applied). Might need new tire anyway, so now is the time.
Yes, on the timing belt change too... check radiator hoses and any other rubber parts too.
Come back with more questions as you get into it further. Lots of good help on this forum.

Defiantly change the belts!!~
Get the bike running and have some fun on it.
Consider changing the spring and seals on the shocks in the back. 32 year old springs are ready to take a break.
Here is the link to how to do it.
