Final drive, drive shaft, axle, etc. cleaning?

Post by bofler »

Doing a tire change and rear wheel type maintenance. Want to know what is appropriate for cleaning all the splines back there? Brake cleaner? Just wipe it as best as possible? Any other tips for cleaning up all the parts in the axle and final drive area?

Wipe off old grease, and use Brake Clean as necessary. Use Honda Moly 77 grease (High Moly content).
Closely examine final splines, both halves. If worn, replace. The flange half (5 pins that engage the wheel hub) might be worn more than the drive hub half, and is easier to replace. But check both.
Check wheel bearings for play. Carefully retighten everything in the correct order, and torque specs to keep perfect alignment upon re-assembly. That is... Axle shaft nut, Drive shaft flange, pinch bolt (left side swing arm), shock mounts. You can search the DIY section for more detailed threads about rear wheel removal / reassembly.
