Post by TimGoldMember »

A couple nights ago my GL1100i started making a Noise. It has 35,000 miles on it, i thought it was a timing belt broke. I got the timing belt covers back enough to see they are still on..It is a scraping noise when i give it gas it getts louder or faster..i turned it off right away...Any Help will greatly appreciated..Thanks

Just a guess... starter motor stuck engaged ??
Can you give more evidence?
Did it begin while riding, or just at startup?
Noise same in neutral vs in-gear with clutch in (clutch problems)
Water pump impeller bearings?
Listen with a piece of hose (stethoscope concept) to locate area of engine where noise originates.

Check the center bolt holding the alternator rotor to the shaft, accessible thru the little center cap on the stator cover. The rotor bolt might have worked loose. On my 1100 the rotor bolt had loosened to the point where the bolt head ground a hole right thru that cap before I had noticed it....

Okay Update, i think the New Starter stretched the starter chain...I seen a youtube video where a mechanic says the motor has to be off the bike to replace the starter chain...He takes out the whole clutch basket. He says thathas to come outbefor you can get to the alternator/starter drive ..Does motor have to be pulled to do the job? Thanks

Doubtful the chain is stretched, starter motor isn't strong enough to do that. And I think it would break before it would stretch.

Besides, the chain is not moving unless you are cranking the engine, with engine running and your thumb off the "start" button the chain is stationary.

So not likely the chain is the source of your noise. I'd look elsewhere.

The engine does have to be removed from the bike to service the starter chain.

It would be helpful if you can record this sound in a video, then post it to YouTube. Then you can post a link to the video here, and we all could hear what this "scraping noise" is...
