No power in gear idles but not great help me

Post by wingman83 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 5:18 pm

Ok bike is 1983 gl1100A I had a charging issue. found that the stator wires had melted so repaired them got it charging great ,but started to go on ride and ass I let out on clutch noticed ran ruff and no power to barely move unless rode clutch at high rpm so turned back towards driveway. I did some reading on here seems might be coils so I pulled plug wires one at a time front left wanted to die if got to far off plug left rear seemed to be little change same on right rear plug but front right wanted to die. But not sure what all this means. Just find it strange it ran good until I fixed stator wires but anyway should I try new plugs or how can I make sure it's coils or not so just don't start throwing money at it that I don't have thank you in advance might do video of test

Sounds like ignition. One coil runs front 2 cylinders (plugs in series... it's better to ground one plug wire at at time, rather than just raise it off the plug). The other coil runs the rear 2 cylinders. Sounds like your rear 2 aren't helping at all, but the bike is running on the front 2. Has enough power to idle, but not pull the bike.
Start checking coils, ignition modules, pulse generators. Most likely suspect is the ign module. You could try to swap ign modules and see if the rear 2 become the dead cylinders then.

You can search the forums for ignition threads. The ignition modules are two small modules, about the size of a cigarette pack, mounted back-to-back on the left side of the frame under the shelter. You probably can just swap their connectors. Been a while since I've been in there so I'm working from memory.

Oldguyglen I've got to checking things out the plug with blue wire near the 3 yellow wires when I push test point to white wire it started running better. I thought , but shut off turned on ran good set idle put tank back on and seat it started idleng down again so started to test it again this time I proved the same white wire it shut on started back up. thinking it's short or what ever that plug goes to looking at plug short
