1983 GL1100 engine chattering

1983 Aspencade, 70k miles. I started noticing some chattering coming from the engine recently. It is noticeable after the engine is up to operating temperature and RPM above 2000 or so. From what I've read from the fine folks on this forum, I came to the conclusion that the valves needed adjustment. Last weekend I cracked open the covers and went through the procedure to verify intakes were .004" and exhausts were .005" - I only had to slightly adjust out the intake on #1 and adjust in the exhaust on #4. Double checked after tightening locking nut - they're correct. I replaced the cover gaskets while I was at it. Went on a ride today and there is no discernible change in the noise coming from the engine area. It is hard to tell for sure, and it may be imagination, but it seems like it is more pronounced on the right side of the bike. Do I need to be concerned at that maybe the fuel pump is about to fail? More importantly, am I risking damage to my bike? Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks! :)
