Ticking/knocking on right side

Post by Austin97 »

hello all, so just a week or so ago my gl1100 has developed a ticking noise, which I believe is coming from the right side of the engine... I have adjusted the valves, and checked the exhaust with no change to the ticking. It mainly occurs immediately at start up then goes away, and then opon warm acceleration. No difference in performance in my mind but it’s annoying and don’t what it to turn to anything bigger. I have heared about the timing belt slipping a tooth can cause this possibility but I would think that would have a effect when adjusting the valves... any ideas welcome! And thanks!

Question..When you adjusted the valves was the engine dead cold?Just like when you first hear the noise.?
A sticking valve, rocker arm, broken inner valve spring or carbon build up may be the problem.
I don't expect a timing belt problem but it wouldn't hurt to inspect/ replace them.

Yes, I let the engine sit overnight before adjusting the valves. All the valve springs are solid. I will check the cleanness of them ASAP. The warmer it gets it sounds more like a wrist pin/ rod knock sound, but I can’t be sure, and wouldn’t know why since it is maintained super well....

Warm and a bit of knocking...And ticking when it's cold...Let's get a second opinion.
What type and grade of oil do you use?

My 1100 has had a wrist pin knock (at least that's what I think it is) on the right side since I got it in '05. Knocks pretty good when you first start it, (sounds like a rod getting ready to let go) but quiets right away as soon as the oil pressure comes up. It can be heard a little at certain RPMs going down the road.

It can't be a rod bearing or crank bearing, It's been knocking like this for 14 years and 50000 miles and many cross-country trips pulling camper, 101k miles on her now. Rod or crank bearing would have given up long ago. It does knock a bit louder now on startup than it did 14 years ago.... Valve adjustments made no difference in the knock.

Only other thing I can come up with that it might be is a sloppy camshaft bearing on the right side (anybody heard of that?).

Anyway, there's a new set of timing belts on the bench waiting to go in and I'll set the valves again, while things are slightly disassembled I might get a Harbor Freight stethoscope and see if I can definitively ID the knock... If it's a wrist pin I'm thinking I should hear it with the stethoscope probe thru a sparkplug hole on a piston top, turning the crank back and forth slightly with a wrench...

If it's indeed a wrist pin, I figure I'll just keep riding her until it lets go... been 50k miles so far (plus however long it was knocking for the PO), it'll probably go another 50k...

How hard is it to find a rod and piston for an 1100? Maybe someday if I'm feeling adventuresome I might split the block..... Probably not worth that level of effort....

if it was infact a wrist pin it would not have lasted that long... one thing i have heared of is "fuel knock" where if one of the carbs is just slightly off it can cause a knock sound
