1983 GL1100 Self Cancelling Turn Signals shut off immediately

Post by PhotoDoctor »

The self cancelling turn signals do just that – they cancel as soon as I turn them on. (This is a bike I bought early this year and now have it back on the road and still a few bugs to work on)

I can keep the signals blinking if I force and hold the signal switch with my thumb. It constantly pulsates to shut off but I can hold it and force the signals to work.

Does anyone know the cure for this?

There are only a few parts to the self-cancel subsystem.

First, check out the angle sensor that is on the underside of the steering. It has two wires.
Reading those two connections at the steering head, they should change value (ohms) when returning handlebars to center from left and right.

There is also a speed sensor (two wires) attached to the speedometer. That is basically a hall-effect sensor that gets "pulses" when the front tire is spinning. Hard to test that, but you can try. Connect a multimeter to those two wires and spin the front tire, you should see pulses when measuring with the AC mV setting. I wouldn't expect to see much else, certainly not ohms. If using an analog meter, the needle should bounce rythmically as the wheel spins. Faster spin, more bounces, but less amplitude. Slower spin, fewer bounces, but higher amplitude (maybe).

You already know that the "switch cancel hammer" (electro-magnet) inside the left switch housing is working.

There is also a turn signal brain "box" that I believe is located on the right side harness, aft of the side cover (remove seat).

Been a minute since I had an 82 with self-canceling turn signals, so take it for what its worth.
When all else fails, RTFM!

Thanks for the info - I'll check those item.

I'll even be fine to eliminate/disable the "self-Cancel" part if needed after checking everything. I'd rather have to turn the blinkers off than fight them to keep blinking every time I use them.

If....Your turn signal is canceling when the bike is stopped and the handlebars are steady the cancel unit is bad.Disable it or replace it.
It can be just unplugged and the turn signals still work.
The "box" is not repairable.Been there..tried that.
The box triggers from 3 possible inputs.
A Number of pulses from the spedo.
Movement of the handlebars.
A preset timer built into the box.

Thanks for that info, someone mentioned the box location but was not positive,

Does this sound like the location, "There is also a turn signal brain "box" that I believe is located on the right side harness, aft of the side cover (remove seat)."

Thanks!

I got so ticked off for it canceling early that I disconnected and removed the controller. Life is much better now....

Bruce - can you confirm the location of the turn signal control box? (It looks like you also have an 83 model)

Thanks

Are you running LED light bulbs and a led flasher unit? It will shorten the signal to the bulbs in both time and distance. Went to two regular 1157 bulbs (more ampredge draw) amber in the front to see if that would solve the problem and nope no change. Next time the shelter is off changing to the regular flasher unit basically going back to stock and see if the flashing goes back to normal before testing components. There is mention on the site about the flasher problem some where. The 83 did just fine before all the changing around.Let us know...

It has been a while since I saw all this but I remember the canceling controller is located under the false tank / enclosure on the left side, forward of the regulator, on a bracket it shares with the two igniter units.

The controller works a solenoid in the switch pod that centers the turn signal switch when it decides to. Without the controller everything is normal and you manually turn them off.

Here are some pix:

Bruce - thanks! That will make the GL1100 blinkers an easy fix.

I'll get on it as soon as I return from a couple thousand miles on the ST1100 !

Thanks again.
