1983 type II radio info
This is my first post. I have greatly enjoyed these forums. I have a question for all you folks better versed in the 1983 gl1100A that may have the type II radio with intercom and cb. I am the new owner of a goldwing with the basic radio. What i would like to do is get the part or model numbers off the radio equipment of the bikes equipt with the type II. Radio, amp, cb unit etc.. I have some of the equipment but need to know the numbers that go together that make up the system. I have looked at the manuals and they are a help but really dont tell you what all goes together. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.. I think it would make a great winter project. Thank you in advance.. Dave

You can usually find the different components on e-bay. Just look carefully as some of the sellers do not know what they are selling.
they say it is a radio but in reality it could be the amp or another component.
The gl1100 radio only went in the 1100's.
Sierra electronics in Troy Oh is the only one's who still work on the radios. They will help with any questions about these radios.

Re: 1983 type II radio info
Welcome aboard Ferdy
Yes the Type II radio system was only on the 82 and 83 year bikes, also used on the Silverwing as well as the Goldwing. There are lots of parts to make the complete system and lots of wiring to stuff in the fairing. All the parts together weigh in close to 30 lbs in the fairing. It is a very antiquated system to say the least. When it all works it's ok but lacks power and reception.
If you have just the AM/FM then there are lots more parts to add to enlarge it to have the full system. Buying used parts are hit and miss as to operational or not condition especially on fleebay. Switches tend to get dirty and not operate from setting in the weather, dust and pressure washers forcing junk into the switches.
Yes Sierra will repair the parts but can add up if there are more than one piece of the system needing repairs. If you are going to keep the bike yourself a lot years and riding lots and want the original system then go for it. You can dump a lot of money into it......without much return.
Or empty out the old system and put in a new marine grade radio for lots less cost, more powerful amps and have better options like Bluetooth connectivity headsets and more.

Re: 1983 type II radio info
I used to have a link for the installation instructions that showed the full system and all the parts of the type II but have lost it from my phone reboot and a web search also turned up empty.

There’s a link here on this site under manuals for that. Just go to manuals, gl1100 & search.
