Need help with stud solution

Post by johnny42 »

If I knew what this setup was called, I'd be able to do a better search, so I need some help please.

This stud broke. It's the rear part of the exhaust where it mounts to the hanger on a 1983 Interstate. Is there any kind of solution to get a new stud in that spot if I were able to drill out the old one? If that's impossible, does anyone have any ideas that might work? I think I do need 2 bolts in that spot, or at least 2 points of attachment. I do not have a welder.

Don't bother to try and drill it out. Just take it to a small shop welder (local custom trailer shops often do odd welding jobs too). They will grind it off flat and weld on a new stud. If you want it to be metric you will likely have to bring your own metric bolt as raw material, or they will use a similar SAE bolt. Shouldn't cost more than a 1/2 hr labor.
