Different Saddlebag Mounts Each Year

Post by Moosehead »

Hello. I'm new to Goldwings. I just purchased a 1982 GL1100 base model and I want to add all the luggage and saddlebags that came stock with an Aspencade. I purchased the trunk, trunk mount, and both Saddlebags off of a 1983 1100A. Now I have to buy the SADDLEBAG MOUNT but I'm finding there are possible differences between mounts for each year. Do I need to buy a 1983 saddlebag mount to put the 1983 saddlebags on or do I need to buy a 1982 saddlebag mount? Also, are the 1983 saddlebags I bought compatible with my 1982? I want to eventually have the wrap around guard with all the lights, and possibly a tray under the rear fender. Thank you for the help.

Welcome to the goldwings.
The 82 and 83 mounts and saddlebag are compatible. The difference is the 83 came with helmet locks on the bars of the mounts where as the 82 had the helmet locks on the frame near the gas tank.
The 83 also had an extra adjustment hole for the passenger peg mount to move the peg location forward.

This is the 83 with the helmet lock.

You will probably have to remove the turn signals from the taillight on your bike as tje saddlebag won't fit with them. You have the naked GL1100. The Interstate and Aspencade came with a different taillight bracket as a reference for you.

This is my 83 Aspencade rear view.

Be sure to get LED bulbs for all the lights and a LED turn flasher to change the turn bulbs so they flash properly. The bike charging was designed not to add more incandescent bulbs. So get LED everything to get optimal lighting without draining the battery at idle.

Great, so the 82 and 83 Saddlebag Mounts are compatible! LEDs are going in all around, even the headlight. I'l remove the rear turn signals.

If I wanted to get the saddlebag crash protection bar that goes all the way around the bags should I hold off and wait to purchase a mount bar that is compatible with that piece or can I add that protection bar later on at a different time? Im seeing so many variations of lights and crash protection bars I keep track. Also, why do some Mount bars have a gap near the tail? Is it for the ball hitch? If that little piece is not included with the Mount bar purchase will it be obvious from the outside that something's missing? I hope that's not too many questions. I just don't want to buy the wrong things. Thanks!

I might have the answer for you, I removed the wrap-around guard complete with bags and trailer hitch from my '80 1100 and put the Vetter bags back on it. Was going to list it for sale next month.

Need to dig around for some pictures.

This fastens to the bike by muffler mount bolt under the passenger foot peg, the top shock mount stud and the rear fender mount bolt, should be able to mount to any year 1100. You will probably want to use your bags, mine are missing the latch hardware and one lid. The bag mounts are part of the guard, not separate mounts to the bike.

A picture of it still on the bike....

There were several aftermarket companies offering the surrounds and yes different lights(all were incandescent lights). They each mount to the stock saddlebag mount/rear crashbar with a clamp around the bar.

go to the top of any page on this forum and click on manuals. Look at the 80 ,81, 82 and 83's.You should find that all use the same hardware. Find the part number of the item you want and do a search with that number. Post a thread on the for sale/wanted and see if anyone here has what you are looking for.

Also look thru the How-to articles at the top of page.

I searched through the manuals and found the part numbers.

Part numbers listed for the 1982: 84250-MB9-770 [right], 84250-463-770 [left], 81237-463-770 [rear pipe].
(Part numbers from a 1983: 84250-MB9-970 [right], 84350-MB9-970 [left].)

I made a wanted ad for it.
