Positive battery terminal melted when trying to start my 83 Goldwing.

Post by Vaughn66 »

When I tried to start my Goldwing today the positive terminal partially melted. It was a new battery I have kept on charger. I have never had a problem like this.
I need new coils.
I wonder if there is a short somewhere that could of caused this

Got to start with basic info & testing.
What actually melted... bat. cable, connector lug, bat. post, ?? could be just a poor connection right at the battery. Did it fry right away with just key on. Or was only when you started to crank it?
Remove the cable. Will the bat. post show 12 v. (after charging) ? If not, you need a new battery. But need to test for shorts before you ruin the new bat. Test for short with ohm meter if possible. Or use a 12 v spare bulb in series with the battery 12v and the cable in the bike. If it glows bright, you have a short.... need more test to track it down. If bulb does not light up, maybe the problem was just the original battery. Note: the bulb will light up when you attempt to crank, and it might glow a little with other normal loads (lights, ignition). Just tell us what you see, and we'll try to help further.

Was a new battery last fall. Kept it on charger all winter. Positive battery terminal partially melted. Was cranking starter when it happened.
Will start checking for a short.

When the battery terminal melts like that, it's typically due to resistance between the cable and the terminal. Pull a ton of current through a connection that has resistance, and it heats up tremendously, enough to melt the terminal. Resistance is usually just from oxidation, grease, or dirt on either the terminal, cable connector, or both.

That's why it's important to always clean the battery terminals AND the cable connector before attaching the cable to the battery.

Did the starter continue to crank after you let off the start button? How did you notice the that the cable melted?
