GL 1100 Oil filler dipstick

Post by Bill P. »

I'm getting close to ready to start up the 1980 GL 1100 that I found in a barn a couple of years ago. So I drained the oil & filter and when I went to refill it I discovered that somebody had cut the dipstick off of the filler cap. I checked Randak, Bike Bandit & Partzilla and none of them have a replacement. Plan B is to drill and tap the cap and install a new dipstick, but I don't know where the oil level marks should be. Would somebody be so kind as to measure the distance from the base of the cap to the full and fill marks and let me know what they are?

Thanks, Bill P.

We all hate the sight glass. Bike has to be on center stand (difficult for me), or propped upright. Have to get down low, often dirty, greasy, wet floor. Flashlight helps. Can't tell "low or empty" from "over full". On a fresh fill, I pour a little, then check, and repeat. I need to see the oil level slowly rise through the window, or I can't tell if I've overfilled already. Some day I'll take careful measurement, with and without filter change, so I can just precisely measure and pour. Good news is that my '80 GW has low miles and doesn't use any oil between changes. Actually, these Wings don't use much oil even after a ton of miles anyway.

once you get your oil level squared away via the nonsensical sight glass, you can either adapt the filler cap as per your original post or make a dipstick that you leave on your keychain or in your toolbox. after a few sessions down on your hands and knees the sight glass isn't nearly as much fun as the honda engineers must have imagined it would be.

There is no need to get down on your knees to look at the site glass. I use my phone to take a picture of it.

I had one on my GL1100 as well, but they haven't been made in years. Have a look at Littlebeaver's homemade dipstick - it works great on his GL1100.

You don't get it.

The sight glass is part of the Honda corporate health program, intended to keep riders in good shape by getting us to perform calesthenics before every ride.

I was thinking of adding a dipstick to my GL1100 but now that I've seen how the engine (particularly the drive shaft) is made, I don't see how it would be possible. Any home-made dipstick would likly interfere with the drive shaft and potentially cause damage to the transmission.
My solution? Use the factory installed wiper at the sight glass and learn to read/ recognize what level your oil is at. Use a smartphone camera and flash to help.

Read somewhere recently (sorry can't find the thread) that using a UV penlight/flashlight helps a lot in reading the level. Bought one for 9 bux off Amazon and it does indeed help particularly with relatively new oil which I always found hard to read in the site glass. With the UV light the oil now shows up as green in color and easy to determine the level.

Aftermarket dipsticks for the GL1100 replaced the drain plug. You can see a homemade one here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12668
