Cant figure out which wire is my neutral switch

Post by NolanSpak »

Hey Folks,
I have a 1980 gl1100I that had the wiring completely butchered by the last owner. He installed an aftermarket speedo but didnt hook up the neutral light wire. Does anybody know the correct color of the wire coming from the neutral switch into the harness up by the headlight for the neutral light? Searched all over the forum but couldnt find anything. TIA!

awesome thank you. so it starts in neutral but the light still wont turn on. could that mean a bad diode?

Colours can be hard to discern sometimes. I would call the wire a light blue with a red stripe. Check just in case. If you have an electrical tester, check that wire for power when the ignition is turned on. Obviously, there should be power. I just installed an electronic speedo on my 1100, works great. If you need help, let me know, I live close, in north Edmonton.

If you found the correct neutral wire here's what a bad diode would do:

Diode Open - N light works normally, have to pull clutch to start engine, even in Neutral.
Diode Shorted - N light comes on in neutral, off when in gear but comes on again when not in Neutral and you pull the clutch. Starter works in Neutral or clutch pulled when in gear.

Maybe just a burned out N bulb?

This is just weird.

Without the clutch pulled or the transmission in neutral there is no path to ground for either the starter solenoid or the neutral light. So when you push the starter button in gear and clutch released nothing should happen unless the gauges fuse is blown and you are back-feeding the rest of the gauges circuit thru the neutral bulb.

In which case your gauges wouldn't be working either.

yeah that was my thought but everything else works. what are the symptoms of a bad neutral switch?

Assuming everything else OK:
Not working - N light never comes on, have to use clutch to start, even in Neutral.
Stuck On - N light never goes out, will start in any gear even without clutch.
