82 gl1100 intake full of fuel.

Post by pwr1164 »

Hi, thanks for this great site.
Picked up 4 Goldwings for next to nothing. 81,82,83,84
working on the 82 interstate first.
Pulled carbs and did a rebuild including diaphragms. First time doing Goldwing carb.
Installed it and ran okay. Tried syncing carbs and was having trouble getting anywhere.
Came back day later and wouldn't crank.
pulled plugs and cylinder 4 was full of fuel.
chalked it up to leaving full on.
Also noticed a sensor of some sort with blue wire going into engine under number 3 carb, the wire was hung up on carb 3 linkage. Thinking that's why it wouldn't sync.
Started up and tried to get it to idle with some success. I could hear bubbling sounds. First I thought coolant. Then took air cleaner off and intake is full of fuel.
Pulled plugs and again #4 is taking all the fuel in it. I don't know if correlates to that carb or just gravity is taking fuel that's in intake to #4

Why is Intake full of fuel?

If your #4 cylinder is the only one filling up with fuel then the float needle on #4 carb is not sealing properly. Tear apart and try again lol

what he said.
i have had pretty good success with all kinds of carbs when this happens by just giving the offending float bowl some good, rapid taps with the handle of a screwdriver. this can help the float needle find its way up into its seat. dont break anything, but let it know that you are there. if no luck, carbs have to come back off.

Thanks guys.
That's what I though but wasn't sure with my limited knowledge of carbs and no experience with diaphragms and accelerator pump.
I did try the tap method and thought it was good. Then noticed intake was full of fuel.
Could you see how much fuel was in the intake? Shocked me. Don't know how it was running have decent and good thing no backfire through intake.
I'll add that a winter went by since the first rebuild and no crank (guessing from leaving fuel on) Could explain next discovery below.
Tore it down again and bowels where pretty nasty.
at first I thought all floats where adjusted way high.
But All float needle plungers where hanging up.
Gonna order few more gaskets and possibly needles. Fingers crossed for Take 2

What would you guys say about how many turn out of idle mixture screw?

Thanks to this site I found out when I did oil filter change that I was missing washer and spring was on the wrong side of filter. It went housing, filter, spring. Not good.
