Oil Dipstick & Filter questions

Post by Jake1100 »

Hi - picked up an 1100 last fall and getting it ready for the summer now. Saw two things that made me wonder: aftermarket oil dip stick and aftermarket oil filter (spin-on.) Appreciate some comments about these changes. Don't like the oil change window, but can live with the current oil filter set up (I had a 1200 before.) Thanks

Both items are a plus. The spin on adapter makes changing the filter much easier. The dip stick makes checking the oil much simpler. The only negetive is with the dipstick. Has to be removed and reinstalled when draining the oil. The connectors have been known to leak if not carefully torqued. I would keep both.

i have a related question so i hope you don't mind if i hitch a ride on this thread ...

i have a 1975 with a sight glass that is too dirty to see anything through, even with a good flashlight. apparently this was the only year that didn't come with a wiper screw on the sight glass. has anybody had any luck cleaning it by adding some magic goo to the crankcase ? failing that, is there a source for a dipstick conversion ? i had hoped that 4into1 might have it but i don't see one there. splitting the engine is not going to happen.

There are no longer any dipsticks available. Here is a link to how to make your own. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12668

Hi Guys,
I just bought a 1983 GL 1100 and wow I thought I would check the oil (well not easy as I am not a small guy) I have ordered an oil filter adapter to make it from a canister filter to a spin on filter but I have heard of a dipstick fill plug that's available but I can't find it
Any help there
Thanks

Hi everyone,
Just an update.
I received the oil filter adapter last week and I just installed it (looks great) It's a polished aluminum block that fits good and looks great and uses the same Amsoil oil filter as a Harley so you can get it in black or chrome, I used the chrome and I love the look.

Cheers
