1100 rear master cylinder issues

Post by sprocket88 »

I'm looking for some advice on the motorcycle I am repairing and trying to get operational for the summer. The previous owner supplied several parts for the bike to repair it including rear master and caliper rebuild kits. He was having the usual issue of the brakes dragging when applied. I removed the master, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt it with the k&l kit. I installed it in the bike and tried to bleed it but found it was leaking from where the plunger enters the cylinder. I disassembled it and inspected the bore and seals. The bore is corroded at the back but the front looks good. The piston seal appears to be distorted and the smaller rubber part on the spring doesn't seal against the sides as it is smaller than the bore. I installed the parts without the plunger or circlip and filled it with fluid. After pumping it several times I found fluid seeping from the seal. It's not very tight in the bore so when I push it to one side the brake fluid comes out. I'm just wondering if I got a bad kit or if I should spring the 90.00 cdn to get the OEM seal kit? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Corrosion has reared its ugly head..
unless you have a mill to make a sleeve,
seems getting another MC is in your future.
Please note; I am not up to speed with a 1100
(but.. brakes are pretty much the same hopefully.)
Good Luck

I just rebuilt my 1983 rear master. The seal and rubber on the spring were both a pretty snug fit.

Sounds like you have the source sorted, but mine was actually leaking from the reservoir connection and drained down to where it looked like it was coming from the bore. A quick generic o ring from oreilys fixed that for me.

Like previously mentioned sounds like corroded bore, or you have the wrong or defective kit. Also I would advise cleaning and recleaning the return port. It was way smaller than I expected and seems to get plugged up easily.
