Low beam not working

Post by bofler »

Fired up the bike today and noticed that the low beam isn't working. If I switch to hi beam it comes on. All other electrics are fine.

Should I just get a new bulb or is there something else that could be the problem that I need to look at?

My first guess would be the bulb. Before you spend any money, even on a bulb, why don't you test it out? Turn on the headlight, unplug the bulb, and test for power to the plug on both high and low beams. Your plug will have three slots where the prongs on the bulb plug in. One of these is ground, one has power on high beam, one has power for low beam. If you have power on both wires, you need a new bulb. If you only have power on one wire, you will need to start tracing the power backward from the plug.

Yep, was simply the bulb. Low beam obviously burns out quicker because it is constantly on. Got a cheapo Sylvania Basic H4 at walmart for 6 bucks and everything is working again. Not a ton of illumination coming from this bulb, but since I rarely (if ever) ride at night I decided it wasn't worth it to drop 30 or 40 bucks on something better.
