What year is this master cylinder?

Post by bofler »

My bike is an '83, but looks like a previous owner put an earlier caliper on the front-left side. I think the front master cylinder is still from an '83, but if someone could confirm that it would be great. As in the photo, there is a "14" stamped in it, and I believe the bore to be 14mm on an '83. Really don't want to buy the wrong rebuild kit. Thanks!

The master cylinder pictured is not original to a GL1100. All used a separate plastic reservoir attached to the master cylinder. 1980 to 82 use a 4 screw mount and in 83 it has a 2 screw mount.

Thanks for the info! Well, I ordered a rebuild kit for an '83, so hope it works out. If anyone else has info on this, would love to hear, otherwise it's going to be trial by fire.

I hope I never have to rebuild mine, years ago after the plastic reservoir disintegrated I went to the local motorcycle "Pick-and-Pull" junkyard and found a bike that had twin front calipers (think it was a Yamaha) and bought that MC. Works great. Trouble is, I forgot to note what make/model the MC came from.

Well, never got to the bottom of where and when this master cylinder is from. Could be some '83 upgrade, could be from another bike around that time. In any case, '83 master cylinders have 14mm pistons and the "14" on mine says that it is 14mm also. I had ordered an '83 K&L rebuild kit before the thought occurred to me that it could be wrong for my mystery master cylinder. Anyway, the kit arrived today and without removing new pieces from the packaging I've made some comparisons with the old parts. All the pieces look to be the exact same dimensions. Won't know how it works until other brake parts arrive next week and I can put everything back together, but seems to be the right fit at this point. Hope that this info might help someone else in the future!

Yes, the 83 had a 14mm bore while the earlier models used a 5/8inch (15.88mm) bore. The smaller bore is used with the single caliper (front left) activated by the hand lever as part of the linked brake system. The foot lever activated the rear and the front right calipers. You will also find if you rebuild the calipers that both left side calipers use pistons that are 32mm and the front right is a 25mm. The 82 did not have linked brakes and used 30mm pistons at each location. The 80 & 81 had single piston calipers of a much larger size. The calipers also have these size numbers on the casting.
Be careful ordering parts from someone other than the Honda dealer as they may/will not know this or even care when they sell it to you.

Good luck!

Thanks Bruce! Yeah, I am naturally skeptical, and luckily so. Before I ordered brake rebuild parts for my '83, I found that the front left (the independent caliper) had been changed from the stock 32mm to a 30mm, most likely sourced from an '82 at some point by one of the previous owners. So I ordered an '82 caliper rebuild for the left-front, and everything else was normal for my '83 bike. I started to get worried about the master cylinder, though. I'm not sure from what or when this one comes from, but hey, seems like the '83 GL1100 K&L rebuild kit fits it, so maybe all the Nissin 14mm MCs from around that time take the same parts.
