Starting Issue

Post by nils.hagen »

My '82 Aspencade isn't starting properly. It starts right up the first time I try it in a day, but every subsequent push of the button results only in a click coming from the solenoid/fuse area. I have a full parts bike right now, so it's just a matter of figuring out what to swap out. Any guesses? I already tried replacing the starter solenoid, but nothing happened.
I'm a little confused why it works once every day, but not the rest of the time. Doesn't seem like a battery issue, maybe a bad connection?

try changing or cleaning the wires from the battery to the solenoid, and from the solenoid to the starter.
also, on my 82 GL1100, I had to take the push button on the handle bars apart and clean the button out, put in new grease. it's a pain in the @#$, but it helped on mine.
just be sure to use the correct grease not axle grease. LOL

Maybe its the starter motor itself. They get hot and parts expand. Test for voltage right on the wire post on the starter when you are just getting the click.
