Which Stant Thermostat- 13368 or 13868?

Post by Dubdenny »

It appears that I may have purchased the wrong Stant brand replacement thermostat for my GL1100i. When I put the Honda p/n 19300-611-005 into the Stant website cross-reference search window, it comes up with Stant #13368 as the correct 180ºF replacement thermostat. I also saw a post somewhere on this forum about the use of a Stant 13368, so I proceeded to buy one. However, when I received the thermostat, it did not have a small bypass hole like the original. After that, I went back and did another search on this forum which produced a different result, indicating that the correct thermostat is actually Stant #13868. So am I correct in assuming that the 13868 piece has a bypass hole unlike the 13368 unit?

In any event, I've read two different explanations for the bypass hole:

1) The only function of the hole is to facilitate bleeding air out of the system upon filling or refilling the cooling system, and/or

2) In addition to #1 above, the small hole also allows some hot coolant from the water jacket to flow past the thermostat in order to allow it to open at the proper temperature in cooling system designs where the thermostat is situated somewhat remotely from the main flow of coolant during warmup.

In the GL1100 design, the thermostat is not placed in the direct flow of coolant during warmup, but rather it sits at the forward end of a T in the piping system leading to the radiator that only sees flow when the thermostat is (already) open. This leads me to believe that the Stant thermostat #13368 that I purchased (w/o a the bypass hole) is not correct and may cause problems.

Since I am not a cooling system guru, I'd like to hear what the collective has to say about this. TYIA

I would use the one that's made like the one that came out. If it worked before, it should work now too.

Agreed. I already returned the Stant 13368 thermostat to pep boys ($10.53) and ordered a Stant 13868 from Rock Auto ($2.89) plus a new Stant 10229 radiator cap ($2.13) for good measure.

Maybe the poster had a finger studder and meant the 13868. But who at this stages knows? I would use the one that has the bypass hole.

Agreed, ordered Stant 13868 (with bypass hole) and it was delivered yesterday. I still can't believe that it was only $2.89 from RockAuto.com, or 92% less than the Honda part 19300-611-005 @ $36.25. Care for a 1,254% markup anyone?

Dubdenny,
One should consider the motorcycle dealer dilemma.

Do they gouge us on new bike prices (like HD does)? Or, new "common" parts for motorcycles (like HD does)? You know, that are used on other viechle's as well, or do they gouge us for service? Or do they gouge us for asking questions?
Poor dealerships.
Personally, I just want to give the dealer my C.C. and the freedom to charge at their whim because I feel sssooo bad for them in not knowing where to gouge people. What a terrible dilemma to be in.
I'm off to go spend my money wisely.
