Throttle cable removal from carbs

Post by sReubenw »

How on this (lots of curse words) Earth do you remove the throttle cables from the carbs, Do I just unhook the cables, Do I remove the whole piece, Do i slither them out all the way from the handle bars, Im about to send this bike off a cliff. Whats the trick here? Everything else if disconnected.

yes. you need to loosen those 10mm nuts on both the "push" and the "pull" cables. then you will have the play to remove the ends of the cables.
all of this is MUCH easier if you unbolt the intake runners from the heads and slide the carbs as far as you can to the left side of the bike. there are o-rings between the intake runners and the heads, no be careful not to damage them.

And after you loosen the nuts and remove the cable sheaths from the mounts, a set of 8 inch hemostats makes removing and replacing the cable ends from the bell crank much easier.

you only have to remove the vacuum slider caps off the right side, then you can manoever the whole carbset out the left side of the bike (on my gl1000 i got away with removing only the cap from carb 1 but if i recall, on the gl1100 you may have to remove 1 and 3 ... someone can correct me here). don't forget there is a choke cable (easy access to that) and a fuel line.

p.s. ... these bikes are difficult to work on at first, but after you have done everything once, the screaming and swearing starts to ease up. enjoy.

i'm not sure what you are getting at with the 1st pic, but pics 2 and 3 clearly demonstrate why the carbs are removed from the left side of the bike.

I guess ill figure it out, I bought a impact extension yesterday hoping I can blast the #1 #3 carb cap screws off, I gotta say i had an easier time with the timing belts than these carbs :(

get yourself a couple of JIS screwdrivers (probably have to get them online as they seem to be a big secret in the tool business). the reason all the "phillips" screws are mangled on japanese bikes is because they are not really phillips screws. the first time you use a JIS screwdriver you will feel the difference in how well it grabs the screw. they MIGHT even remove the mangled ones if the butchery hasn't gone too far.
